Sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard in varicose and spider vein treatment. It is non-invasive and takes less than an hour to perform, with patients able to resume their daily activities immediately following treatment.
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure with little or no downtime for patients. It improves the cosmetic appearance of the varicose veins while also reducing the associated symptoms such as pain, itching and burning.
During the procedure, a solution is injected into the vein with a very fine needle. The solution causes a reaction along the internal wall of the vein causing it to swell and stick together. As a result the vein no longer fills with blood and gradually fades over a period of weeks until it becomes barely visible.
After the treatment, compression stockings are applied to compress the veins, this helps to push the vein walls together causing them to shrink and eventually disappear. Normally, you will be required to wear compression stockings for at least 3 days and 3 nights, after this you can take the stocking off and put back on to sleep in at night only. Your stockings must be worn during the day for the rest of the 2 week period.
It is advised that you avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks after the procedure. You’ll also want to avoid sun exposure to the treated areas during that time. The inflammation caused by the injections combined with sun exposure can lead to dark spots on your skin, especially if you already have a dark skin tone.
